The MIG Cricket Club is today
one of the foremost cricket clubs in the city of
Mumbai
and plays in the 'A' division of the Dr. H. D.
Kanga League. The Club has also won the Kanga League 'A' division
title 3 times besides other tournaments.
|
|
The beginnings
of the Club were small. In the early 70’s the club gained affiliation with the
Mumbai Cricket Association and laid its first cricket turf at the playground
next to MIG Colony.
Initially, the ground looked like a paddy field with a green patch at the
center but the club management improved the ground over time and started
playing its friendly and tournament matches at its own venue.
Till that time Khar Gymkhana was the only ground available in the
suburbs for MCA tournaments.
With the addition of the club ground a popular venue became available to
cricketers in suburbs. This gave
the club a status in the MCA’s register and made an impact on
cricketing scene of the city. During
this time the club’s cricket team also made an impression of an upcoming team
by winning some junior tournaments.

|
After
affiliation to MCA in 1974, the club participated in the
prestigious Kanga League Tournament.
In 1975 and the very first year of its participation, after qualifying to play
the league, earned promotion from the last ‘G’ division to
‘F’ division, the heroes of success were Shri. Avinash
Parkar, Late Manu Sakhalkar, Shri. Dilip Ghokale, Shri. Suresh Waran, Shri.
Ashok Sonawane and others. However,
the club team struggled for next 10 years to get its next promotion in 1984 and
continued its progress well to reach the ‘A’ division in 1993 while winning the
championship of ‘E’ & ‘C’ division in
1987 and 1991 respectively.

|
A new cricket
turf wicket was prepared on the new playground and none other than another
cricketing legend, the late Shri Vijay Hazare, inaugurated the new ground on
4th
August 1996. The new playground with its surroundings became very
popular with senior cricketers and it became a regular venue for the senior
tournament matches including ‘A’
division Times Shield and even the Board matches.
In the very next year in 1997, the Golden Jubilee year of Independence
and also of the Dr. H. D. Kanga Cricket League, the Club’s cricket team
achieved its maiden triumph by winning the ‘A’ division of the
league and followed it with its maiden triumph by winning the prestigious “Purshottam
Shield Cricket Tournament” .
The cricket team till date has achieved 3 championships wins of the ‘A’
division of Kanga League in its tenure in the ‘A’ division
since 1993 and practically all the Senior & Junior Club tournaments
conducted under the auspices of Mumbai Cricket Association.

The dream of
the club to stage a first class match at the club ground was achieved before
the end of the year 2000. On 23rd December 2000, the Mumbai-Baroda
Ranji Trophy tie was witnessed by thousands of cricket fans when Tendulkar
faced the new pace sensation Zaheer Khan supported by young Irfan Pathan who
was very soon emerging as India’s pace sensation. Also playing was
India
’s stumper, Nayan Mongia behind the stumps, in the company of Vinod
Kambli, Vassim Jaffer, Ajit Agarkar
Samir Dighe and others. The match was a great cricketing encounter as Nayan
Mongia saved the match for
Baroda
with last man Rakesh Patel holding the fort for the last two overs from Agarkar
and Tendulkar who scored the only hundred in the match.

|
The match gave
the status to the club of being the fifth “FIRST CLASS VENUE” of
the city of
Mumbai
after Brabourne, Wankhede Stadium, Bombay Gymkhana & R.C.F.
The ground is now used regularly for Board matches for Ranji Trophy as
well as other tournaments. The
Women’s Cricket Association of India played their World Cup and other One Day
International matches at the club ground.
Today the club has become one of the best cricketing institutions with its own
cricket academy and conduct of two major tournaments,
“The Padmakar Talim Shield” and “The Young Comrade
Shield” and a suburban tournament “The Mahim-Dadar Challenge
Shield” . The cricketing image of the club has taken the club to
great height and has given status of one of the best sporting institutions of
the city of
Mumbai
.
